The Seaside Cruizers Car Club was formed in 1993 by six local car enthusiasts, with monthly coffee meetings that Dave Tinderington hosted at Madrona Beach Resort (rumor has it that the odd beer was also consumed). The founding members were: Dave Tinderinton, Dave Gray, Steve Palmer, Bob Lins, Dan Weflen, and Vern Evernden. The Club was founded on the basis of being a casual low key club for guys that simply wanted to get together, talk about cars and perhaps put on a small annual car show. During the winter of 1993, the small group of friends decided to host a small Car Show and Group Camp-out in a grassy area of Craig Bay for the summer of 1994.
After that, more and more Car Guys showed interest in helping… and a Car Show was planned for the grassy area in front of the Island Hall Hotel in Parksville B.C. for the summer of 1995 (where it was reported that 65 cars attended) and 1996. Those shows were more successful than the Club expected and for the first time in Seaside Cruizers history… Cars were turned away, because of lack of space.
The group of guys knew that they had to find a new home for the show. So, Dan and Vern approached the owners of the Rocking Horse Pub in Nanoose Bay. With the owners approval… the club now had a spot for the 1997 show. The now twelve plus members decided it was time to rally the troops, because this move was going to be no small adventure. They were going to have to mow grass, pull down old fences, fill holes in the parking are, and even pull stumps. Thank goodness for Colin Springford, who brought in excavating equipment and spent hours grading and leveling the area. The efforts of the club were well rewarded, with having very successful shows on those grounds for the next four years.
Trouble appeared a few years later. A member announced that the Seaside Cruizers could no longer plan a show at the Rocking Horse, because it was going to be sold and he and his partners were going to start their own car show at the Rocking Horse. Well, again it was time to move on. A member, Rick Parker approached the Town Of Qualicum Beach on behalf of the club and secured use of the Civic Center parking lot for the 2001 Show & Shine Event.
The 2001 Show & Shine at the Civic Center was made even larger with the introduction of the first “Street Dance” hosted by Mr. Red Robinson and his band The Hitmen. The event had again quickly outgrown the Civic Center location in Qualicum Beach. For the 2002 Father’s Day Show & Shine, permission was grated to move to our present Downtown Qualicum Beach location. This was also the year that the club introduced their first organized, Friday evening “Cruise Night”… staging at the Parksville A&W complete with Car Hops! Plus, looking to add to the fun and further improve the Farther’s Day weekend experience, the Seaside Cruizers added the Saturday morning “Poker Run” to the calendar of events! A full weekend of Fun and Cars!
Years later, through the continued efforts of many members past and present, the Seaside Cruizers Father’s Day Show & Shine Weekend is well respected as one of the Premier Car Events on the entire West Coast. Our Show & Shine was named by Ms. Oprah Winfrey as one of the top 10 things to do on Father’s Day, in North America! The Seaside Cruizers Weekend is second to none in terms of location, design, atmosphere, and function.
Our club now has more than 80 members. From a show that started with 65 cars, we now welcome 600 cars along with over 30,000 spectators and registrants! Our participants come from all over British Columbia (Most notably Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland); other provinces including Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. Plus many come from the USA, including: Washington State, Oregon, California, Montana, Arizona, and more!
On April 4, 2005, we were incorporated as a non-profit Society under the laws of British Columbia. Each year we contribute our net proceeds to local charities. In 2017, we set another new club record, by donating over $35,000 to the community, bringing the total contributions since 2006 in excess of $170,000.00!
